🎯 Purpose
JOSL enables free use, study, and implementation of the JTel Identity Standard while maintaining:
- The integrity of the standard
- The authorship of its creator
- A unified and consistent evolution of the specification
JOSL ensures JIS remains an open standard without fragmenting into competing variants.
✓ Permissions (You May)
- Use — Read, study, and reference the specifications
- Implement — Build in open-source software, commercial products, IoT devices, robotics, telecom, identity frameworks, operating systems
- Integrate — Layer JIS on top of existing protocols (SIP, HTTP, MQTT, Matrix, WebRTC, etc.)
- Extend — Propose extensions through the official JIS RFC process
- Commercialize — Build and sell products using JIS
! Requirements (You Must)
- Attribution — Display the required attribution (see below)
- Preserve Naming — Do not rename the standard or publish forks as "official"
- Preserve License — Keep the JOSL text intact and included
- Declare Non-Conformance — If your implementation deviates, state it clearly
✗ Prohibitions (You May Not)
- Claim Ownership — You cannot claim to own the JIS specification
- Privatize — You cannot relicense or close-source any part of JIS
- Mislead — You cannot publish incompatible derivatives as "JIS"
- Remove Authorship — You cannot change or hide the origin
- Create Competing Governance — You cannot create alternative "official JIS" organizations
📝 Required Attribution
When using or implementing JIS, you must clearly display:
"Powered by JIS (JTel Identity Standard), authored by Jasper van de Meent."
⚠️ Non-Conformance Declaration
If your implementation deviates from the official spec, you must state:
"This implementation is not fully conformant with the official JIS standard."
